The Hinoki brothers, the deities enshrined at Asakusa Shrine, rescued a statue of Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) and placed it on the stump of a Japanese pagoda tree. There is a story that ten children built a thatched hut out of reeds overnight to enshrine it there.
The shrine dedicated to those ten children (the Ten Child Deities) was once located within the grounds of Senso-ji Temple, but was moved to Asakusa Shrine due to the so-called separation of Shinto and Buddhism during the Meiji era, and is said to have been destroyed by fire during the last war.
On the evening of March 17th, a ceremony was held to enshrine "Jissha Gongen" next to the three stone monuments on the temple grounds.
When you visit Asakusa Shrine, please be sure to also pay your respects to the deities of the Ten Shrines of Gongen.
